Caution Spoilers! If you include the prequel Novella, The Assassin’s Blade, Empire of Storms is the 6th book in the Throne of Glass series. Fans often read this book as a tandem read with the next installment, Tower of Dawn. While the Throne of Glass community is highly divided on whether to read these books tandem style or separately, I chose to ream them as standalone novels. This is the way the author intended for them to be read and I am very happy I chose to read them this way. Empire of Storms is packed with different character dynamics and fast moving plots. Reading it on its own allowed me to give this complex story my full, undivided attention. From start to finish, this book keeps you on the edge of your seat with non-stop action, profound character development, unexpected relationships and shocking plot twists. Empire of Storms follows Aelin Galathynius and her court as they desperately try to build an army and forge alliances to stand against the dark Valg king, Erawan. What makes this installment so refreshing is how it breaks away from the localized settings of the previous books. While earlier entries kept the characters largely confined to places like Rifthold or Wendlyn, this book launches them on a massive trek across the continent of Erilea. Experiencing the story through multiple points of view allows us to see corners of this world we didn't even know existed. Sarah J. Maas does a brilliant job with the descriptive imagery of each new environment, giving every location its own distinct aesthetic and unique dangers. From the pirate-infested waters of Skull’s Bay to the swampy, perilous terrain of the Marshes, the world feels incredibly alive, making the characters' journey feel like a true, high-stakes epic. Beyond the massive battles, one of the absolute highlights of Empire of Storms is the incredible character development of Elide Lochan and her unexpected relationship with Lorcan Salvaterre. Elide starts the series as a victim of numerous traumas—weak, timid, and seemingly hopeless. However, in this book, she is sent on a journey alone and emerges as a remarkably fierce character. Her survival skills are unmatched, proving that you don't need magic or combat training to outsmart your enemies. When she crosses paths with Lorcan, a ruthless and grumpy Fae warrior who has been notoriously brutal throughout the series, their dynamic unexpectedly works beautifully. I really loved that Elide isn't the least bit afraid of Lorcan, constantly saying whatever she wants to him. As their relationship develops, Lorcan becomes deeply fond and fiercely protective of her, while Elide manages to overcome a lifetime of betrayal and learns to trust someone again. Their slow-burn chemistry was easily one of my favorite parts of the novel. Another standout relationship in Empire of Storms is the unexpected dynamic between King Dorian Havilliard and the witch, Manon Blackbeak. Both characters enter this book deeply broken; Dorian is trying to recover from the trauma of being controlled by a Valg prince, coping with the death of his father, and struggling to control his intense magic. Meanwhile, Manon is questioning everything she has ever known about her heritage and trying to break free from her brutal grandmother's reign. When their paths cross, their chemistry is instant and electric. This pairing was especially surprising to me because Manon has long been an enemy of Dorian’s close friend, Aelin. However, Dorian and Manon recognize a shared sense of loneliness in one another. They have wildly entertaining banter, mutual respect, and a hidden tenderness beneath a layer of darkness. Their relationship may have been entirely unexpected, but it created a brilliant dynamic that was incredibly entertaining to read. While there is a massive amount of character development in this story, Lysandra’s journey has been my absolute favorite. When she was first introduced, I really didn’t like her; she seemed like a spoiled courtesan who existed just to make Aelin's life harder. However, as the series unfolds, you discover that her petty behavior was actually a mask used to survive, making it impossible not to sympathize with the horrors she endured. Once she reconnects with Aelin and magic returns, she completely transforms into a fierce warrior who proudly unleashes her raw power. Her shape-shifting abilities are easily my favorite part of her character. Whether she is fighting as a sea dragon or a ghost leopard, she always amazes me, especially since she retains her fiery personality in every form. Ultimately, her magic represents her finally taking control over her own body and destiny. Empire of Storms ends with Lysandra upholding a massive, heartbreaking secret she promised Aelin—a twist that proves her fierce loyalty and her selfless dedication to Terrasen. Beyond the individual characters, the overall plot of Empire of Storms has the most shocking and unexpected plot twists of the series. One being Aelin discovering the deal that was made with the gods regarding her destiny. Finding out the truth from Elena about what happened to Aelin as a child was a huge plot twist in itself. But Elena continues to surprise you by explaining Aelin’s sole purpose of being alive is to sacrifice herself in order to defeat Erawan and save Erilea. The author balances these heartbreaking twists by also having numerous characters from Aelin’s past resurface. This was very surprising but also very satisfying. I really enjoyed how the author made the story feel like it came full circle by connecting the current story to several stories that happened in the first few books and the prequel novella. The willingness of these characters to help Aelin also proves that while Aelin lived under her alias, Celaena Sardothien, every act of kindness and alliance she formed paid off. Overall, Sarah J Maas does an exceptional job seamlessly connecting individual character arcs into an intense overlapping narrative. The progression of each character was very satisfying and entertaining to watch unfold. Empire of Storms felt like a turning point in the series and I was very shocked by the ending. I am very eager to dive into the next book to find out what happens next.
